From August 1st 2022 until March 31st 2023, I worked as an intern for Renfrewshire Council under a specific branch known as "Invest in Renfrewshire", an employability service. During this traineeship, I had undertaken many projects - and created a substantial amount of work that was used on social media as marketing; as posters to place around the town and also to use in the "Incube Shop" as ways to promote and market the shop a little better.

Young Person's Guarantee Instagram

One of my main duties was to run the "YPG" or "Young Person's Guarantee" Instagram.

This ended up being more difficult than I expected as I had little in way of freedom to actually post content and everything had to be pre-approved. In addition to that, the Instagram was designed to meet a 16-24 year old market whilst almost exclusively posting about jobs.

I made the most of it however, and kept making content nevertheless!

Posters

During my time with Renfrewshire Council, I had to design a series of posters and other printouts for the purpose of usually advertising events or other services that were available from the company.

Employability Customer Charter

A larger project I had a lot more creative freedom in was the development of the Employability Customer Charter - which consisted of a poster design and a pamphlet. I had a lot more creative and design control when it came to the concepts used for these.

Poster Concepts

Pamphlet Iterations

One of the first hurdles when it came to designing the poster and pamphlet was the sheer amount of text that was expected to be present on them. Because it was exceptionally wordy; trying to fit all the text in whilst also creating something professional and clean-looking was not an easy aspect of this.

I came up with multiple concepts for both of these with a lot of feedback going forwards and backwards between myself and the coordinator in charge of the project. Eventually, she decided that we could cut down on the amount of text and this helped exponentially with both its design and also making the information concise, clear and relevant.

These finals are set to be used in Job Centres in Renfrewshire but also internally through Renfrewshire Council to give a condensed version of a larger document known as the "Customer Charter".

InCube Shop

My biggest, best and favourite project was the InCube Shop.

In a bid to pick up the shop's image in a post-Covid world, I was assigned to come up with some ideas and concepts to help sell the shop and its unique concept and I came up with a few solutions to help with this.

The InCube Shop is a unique concept that is run by Renfrewshire Council. It consists of designers from local areas in Renfrewshire who wish to sell their products in a retail environment. All proceeds go straight back to the designers for each item sold.

In addition, trainees from around Renfrewshire who are looking for retail experience would work inside the shop to gain the relvant work experience.

Although I wasn't allowed to change over any of the existing assets and content - such as logos - I was able to use what was there and reinvent it somewhat. One of these was to improve the visual direction of the logo and posts for social media.

In addition to that, I took many photographs of products to present them more effectively online with other promotional images and materials that would be printed around the shop or to be posted online on social media.

Information Cards

One of my key innovations was the idea of creating little 'information cards', featuring the designers and some of their products onto a little card that would sit nearby in-store; telling the story of the designer and selling the products more effectively.

FIRST CONCEPTS

These went through many iterations with my first concept using them akin to business cards and I had visualised them as being quite a bit smaller than the final product ended up turning out.

SECOND CONCEPTS

With a little bit of feedback under my belt, I went ahead with a second wave of ideas. This time, we decided they would be A5 prints that could sit in stands in front of the relevant products for the designers and we picked two alternating concepts from this list to use for the finals.

Final Cards

The final version of the cards consisted of a written statement I made; based on information that was on each individual designer's website. Using a blend of their own words and mine, I put the cards together with some images of the designers and their products.
